Chapter 39 (or Volume Five Chapter Three)
Our first introduction! Basically you learn that he's on Akimichi Chouji and Yomanako Ino's team and he's one of the nine's rookie genins. It's also learned that Naruto doesn't really care for him and calls him a "big mouthed idiot". His tema is called the Idiot Trio, not that he really cares anyway.
Chapter 40 (or Volume Five Chapter Four)
He is in but two pages, but oh well. You see that he's not very fond of Naruto either and doesn't like his Big Shot Attitude. You also see how smart he is, but if your like me you think he's a minor character and pay him no heed. I read it now and go "Wow, i missed a lot of signs".
Chapter 43 (or Volume Five Chapter Seven)
He's not really in it, but you see two pictures of him ^_^ One is of him sweating when they announce that if they don't answer the tenth question right they will be genin forever, and the other is him smirking at Naruto when Naruto goes "Don't Underestimate Me!!!"
Chapter 45 (or Volume Five Chapter Nine)
Basically you get to see Shikamaru's annoyed with every side where in which he says with an annoyed face "Survival? Man, this test sucks." And when they show everyones reaction to the test Shikamaru has his pouting lip on and his eyes of general disgust. ^_^ It's funny, every one else has very narrowed eyes looking down and his are looking up like he's rolling them. ^_^ He also says "Risking our lives? This sucks but we'll have to do it." Hehe, see how he doesn't like doing anything, but if he has to he will.
Chapter 51 (or Volume Six Chapter Six)
Hehe! He and his team are hiding in the bushes! ^_^ Neji find them, but says he doesn't wantto take a scroll from someone so weak. ^_^ He has cute little sarcastic thoughts about himself and about his teamates through his little part in the comic. Ino says "Let's go find some weak guys!" and he thinks "There is no one is weaker than us." ^_^
Chapter 52 (or Volume Six Chapter Seven)
He and his trio say they should go find the Naruto team because their weaker but Ino says that's impossible because Sasuke the genius is on that team. Of course to give depth to the situation (because Sasuke was really scared in the fights preceeding this chapter) says "even geniuses can crumble under the pressure of the real world" which is kind of funny because he never has one been really scared. Just annoyed with his situation.
Chapter 53 (or Volume Six Chapter Eight)
Hiding in the bushes again! ^_^ He and the trio are looking Sakura fight all by herself and Shikamaru is wondering if they should join. He really doesn't know them so he indecisive. Chouji just wants to run away. ^_^ This time he actually asks Ino what to do, probably because she's the one who used to be friends with Sakura. He has second thoughts when he see that Sasuke and Naruto are in serious danger of losing their lives.
Chapter 54 (or Volume Six Chapter Nine)
They basically hide in the bushes wrestling with themselve until Sakura is just about to be killed, the n the trio rush out and save the day. Sakura doesn't look to good...
Chapter 55 (or Volume Seven Chapter One)
He really doesn't do anything but be really angry at how one of the sound nin fights and then he uses his famed Shadow Binding Skill to freeze the sound nin that defeated Lee and was about to kill Sakura.
Chapter 56 (or Volume Seven Chapter Two)
He's on the first page! Yay! Basically he's just reacting to the Sasuke who is looking very scary at the moment. For once it's not an expression of annoyance, it's more of an expression of calculation, like he's trying to figure out what happened. Everyone else is just surprised.
Chapter 57 (or Volume Seven Chapter Three)
Basically it's just him and Naruto fighting. Or acutally Naruto trying to figure out what's going on and Shikamaru is the only one really available to answer and like the lazy guy he is he says "It's too much of a hassle to explain it to you..." Hehe! ^_^ So like Shikamaru,
Chapter 65 (or Volume Eight Chapter Two)
Shikamaru is one picture! ^_^ He is with all the people who passed the second test looking kind like he doesn't care hat he passed.
Chapters 66-68 (or Volume Eight Chapters Three & Four)
Basically reaction thoughts, but he' in there, just not in the main plot for the chapters. ^_^ He's just watching with the rest of the Chuunin to bes.
Chapter 71 (or Volume Eight Chapter Eight)
Basically all Shikamura does in this chapter is predict how long and tedious the fight between Sakura and Ino will be.
Chapter 72 (or Volume Eight Chapter Nine)
Again, all Shikamaru does is comment on the fight between ino and Sakura. He makes funny faces though which always make me laugh. ^_^ His reactions are always a blast! ^_^ He actually seems geniunely surprised about how smart Ino really was. ^_^
Chapter 73 (or Volume Nine Chapter One)
The faces he makes! I love them! ^_^ Again, he's reacting and commenting on Ino and Sakura's fight.
Chapter 74 (or Volume Nine Chapter Two)
Yay! Finally, it's Shikamaru's turn to fight, not that he's enthuistic about it. But unfortunently for him he's not only pitted with a girl, but by Kin Tsuchi who is one of the sound nin who attacked Sakura so she knows his moves. It's starts out not so well because she knows to avoid his shadow, but then she throws needles at him and Shikamaru assumes it's an old ninja trick (of course he knows it isn't but false bravado is always fun to throw your enemies of gaurd. The trick is throw a needle with bell, and then throw one with out so he'll react to the sound of bell but get stabbed by the other unladened needle. Fun, ne? But she put string on the bells on the needles so he is dodging invisible needles and then he gets attacked, but wait. Kin can't move? Why is that, because he streched his shadow to look like string shadows but strings don't make shadows at the height so it's his clever little trap. Now she can only move how he moves. ^_^ So he throws a Shurinken and but of course since she moves the same she throws a shurinken at him. She thinks he's bluffing, but he's not! ^_^ He bends backwards to avoid the projectile, but she bends backwards full force into a wall. HE then gives a speech about how true shinobi know their surroundings.
Chapter 75 (or Volume Nine Chapter Three)
He makes a cute comment about the Naruto fight which goes to show he feels that Naruto is also a big mouthed idiot. But he's smiling when he thinks it, so i actually think he's excited about what Naruto's going to do.
Chapter 76 (or Volume Nine Chapter Four)
He makes some comments and helps explain things to the reader while explaining it to his dumb teammates. He actually looks into this fight, probably Naruto wasn't the guy he remembered him to be.
Chapter 77 (or Volume Nine Chapter Five)
Shikamaru is really into Naruto's fight! He seems very impressed and very excited. This isn't Shikamaru!!! What happened to your cool "i don't care" demeanor!!!
Chapter 78 (or Volume Nine Chapter Eight)
Poor Hinata! I hate this fight.. That's okay, Neji gets his just deserts by Naruto anyways, but still! Basically, Shikamaru expresses worry for Hinata. I think she's kinda gal ^_^ Not ugly, not strong willed, just ... there. ^_^ Oh! Poor Hinata!! I should make a shrine to her. She's just so.. cool!
Chapter 83 (or Volume Ten Chapter Two)
Gack! ONe picture of him being slightly surprised by Lee's speed. His mouth says "wow" but his face says "eh."
Chapter 85 (or Volume Ten Chapter Four)
He's the only chuunin to be who knows where Gaara and Le are. ^_^ Above them. That's his only scene.
Ali doesn't have Volume Eleven Yet.... So you'll just have to deal yo... ^_^ I have Volume Twelve though.
Chapter 106 (or Volume Twelve Chapter Seven)
Yay! The beginning of the fight that earn Shikamura the position of Chuunin. ^_^ He plans to forfeit but Naruto who was really paying attention to his buddies apprehensivness pushes him off the balcony into the ring. He isn't very happy though because he has to fight a girl.... again... At the end, he demonstrates how good he is at running away as easily avoids Temari's attack saying the infamous "I don't really care if become a chuunin or not, i won't lose to a girl"
Chapter 107 (or Volume Twelve Chapter Eight)
His fight is fun to read or watch, but it's not fun to explain. I'll try though. He basically hides in the shadow running away from Temari's attacks and then tries to extend his shadow to freeze her. She catches it at the last second and he misses. Then his plan begins to formalate as he sees some certain things in the enviroment that would help him win. Then he sits around and thinks and we find out that he's kinda like an old geezer who likes to think things through. Asuma also says that Shikamaru is a genius with an IQ of over 200. Some more attacks on Temari's side and Shikamaru's plan is put into action. He waits for the sun to go down to increase the shadows, or so we think he's waiting for that. He's really just trying to push Temari back. But that's the next chapter.
Chapter 108 (or Volume Twelve Chapter Nine)
The fight continues but all the sudden a parachute appears? Well, in the last chapter we see Shikamaru taking off his overcoat and know we know why! It with his kunai makes parachute which in the air creates a shadow. He then adds it to his own and tries to catch Temari, or so we think. He's really just pushing her back. So Temari, thinking she's figured him out seeks to end it all and in the middle of her final attack she stops. Why? Well, Shikamaru noticed to holes in the ground from Naruto's match when he did a sort of tunnel thing to get Neji from the underground. Well, the tunnely has a shadow, so he kept pushing Temari back to the tunnely behind her so he could catch her from behind where she wasn't watching. Of course, Shikamaru being Shikamaru gives up, saying he only has ten seconds left of holding her there anyway and he doesn't have the strength to finish her off. But really, he doesn't feel like fighting any more matches, it's to much of a hassle. ^_^ How Shikamaru-ish.
Chapter 109 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter One)
We find that everyone acknowledges Shikamaru as a great leader and probably the next Chuunin. He and Naruto leave this chapter to go watch the next match with Sasuke vs Gaara.
Chapter 110 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter Two)
Shikamaru tells Sasuke he's looking forward to the fight and he and Naruto go to watch it, of course he insists that they "slowly walk up the stairs". He's so funny. ^_^ Of course that save the two's lives. If they had walked any little bit faster Gaara would have killed them, but they avoided that and some unfortuenent chuunin or genin, i don't know were killed instead. They were pretty creeped out, needless to say.
Chapter 111 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter Three)
He and Naruto reminensce about Gaara's visit at the hospital where he tells them that he will kill everyone, but didn't. They realize Gaara had the perfect chance to kill them but didn't because they weren't of the talent or power that would satsify. They know then that Sasuke's life is in real danger.
Chapter 112 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter Four)<BR>
He and Naruto sit on the stairs with worried looks and Naruto runs off to go stop the fight because he's worried Sasuke will die.
Chapter 113 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter Five)
Shikamaru just makes sly comments to himself about how Naruto's worry turned to jealousy. ^_^ His smile is cute. ^_^
Chapter 117 (or Volume Thirteen Chapter Eight)
Shikamaru is assigned an A-Rank Mission but does he want it? Of course not, he's to busy playing possum so he won't get attacked but that doesn't stop Pakkun from biting him which gives him away. ^_^ He certainly is himself when he refuses with his usual non excitement for risking his life, but he gets forced into it anyway. His scene ends with his "Why Me?" statement.
Chapter 118 (or Volume Fourteen Chapter One)
Shikamaru basically is the leader of Sakura and Naruto and tells them what to do. He's the only one to see through what the Hunter Nin's are doing and he knows that he is the only one to know they would look for an ambush. So he fakes an ambush and and then catches them with his shadow and that's the end of hte chapter. ^_^
Chapter 119 (or Volume Fourteen Chapter Two)
Shikamaru stares down the jaws of death and thinks about his dreams of waht he wanted to be. He knows that there is a ninth ninja so he can't kill the other eight without the ninth stopping him. Finally his shadow reaches his limit and he prepares to die, but wait! The ninja he assumes that was bring death from behind was actually Asuma! Asuma saves the day and lets Shikamaru rest (after all, he used up all his Chakra in the fight wit Temari!)
Shikamaru doesn't appear in fifteen or the rest of fourteen. I don't have Sixteen or Seventeen. So on to eighteen! ^_^
Chapter 154 (or Volume Eighteen Chapter One)
He's there i swear!For one picture. ^_^ He's getting yelled at with Naruto and AKimaru and Chouji for not concentrating.
Chapter 172 (or Volume Twenty Chapter One)
Shikamaru is seen by the adminstratin building... but why? Well Naruto doesn't know. ^_^ And i don't either. I'm sure i'm missing something. ^_^ He calls Tsunada and a big talking woman with an attitude and gets the funniest face when he learns Tsunada is the 5th Hokage. He and his dad have a nice talk about girls and Shikamaru really doesn't like them because they're "selfish and annoying" and you never know what they want. Me being a woman, i woiuldn't really know how to answer that. ^_^ I don't think i'm that conniving, i know others are, but me? ^_^ The next time you see Shikamaru is in a flack jacket, the mark of a chuunin! he looks quite embarassed that he has to wear it and that Asuma's celbrating it.
Chapter 173 (or Volume Twenty Chapter Two)
Poor Rock Lee! OH well.. Basically Shikamaru is having lunch or dinner or something with his trio and his jounin and Chouji gets insulted tough no one realizes they insulted him. Shikamaru makes him smile when he says that eating isn't a battle. But then Asuma ruins Chouji's good day! Shikamaru has to change that! ^_^
Chapter 174 (or Volume Twenty Chapter Three)
The talk behind th restaurant after Ino leavs Chouji! Ino and Chouji are talking about dieting, or rather Ino is talking about deting and Chouji is just trying to put his two cents in. ^_^ She leaves, Shikamaru comes in and tell Chouji that most men like chunkier girls. ^_^ But for some reason, Shikamaru says she's one of kind! Ooooo, does he like her, or is he playing on Chouji's love for her! I don't know, but one of them likes her! ^_^ Shikamaru makes Chouji feel better by making fun of Ino and Chouji tells him he's funny and that he knows that Shikamaru is more incredible than Sasuke or Neji. Shikamaru senses the jealousy and regret welling up in Chouji and tells him that they both are who they are and there is no basis for comparison. He also tells Chouji not to take Asuma to personally and Chouji says good luck. ^_^ That's all. ^_^
